Fishing in the British Virgin Islands
Anyone over the age of 18 who would like to throw a line in BVI waters has to obtain a BVI fishing license, at minimum, a week in advance of their charter. The license currently costs $55 per person. The license requires that your yacht has also been registered with the Conservation & Fisheries Department. We will be happy to guide you through the process and will remind you of this necessity should you chose to fish during your charter vacation.
If your yacht does not have a license then you can not fish from the charter yacht. We will advise you of this as you are choosing your yacht charter.
Spearfishing is illegal in the BVI, as is fishing within a marine park.
What is Ciguatera?
A lot of people have this idea of coming to the islands and being provided fresh fish from the sea! However, in the northern Caribbean, the reef fish have the potential to carry a disease called Ciguatera. Ciguatera is caused by eating fish containing toxins that are produced by a marine microalgae. It is most often found in reef fish, but other species include barracuda, grouper, red snapper, moray eel, amberjack, parrotfish, hogfish, and kingfish. Symptoms include nausea and vomiting, as well as neurologic symptoms such as tingling fingers and toes.
Your crewed charter captain will be aware of this disease and be able to advise you on fish that are safe to eat.
Bone fishing trips in the BVI
While other BVI islands are volcanic mountain forms that rise from the sea, Anegada (a Spanish word meaning “submerged land”) is a flat, low-lying stretch of sand about 11 miles long and two miles at its widest. Its highest point is just 28 feet above sea level. It is the best-kept secret in Bonefishing. Since there are only a few guides you will hardly see another boat during your guided trip but you will see lots of bonefish, baby tarpon, conch islands and potentially flamingos! Let us know if you are interested in booking a guided flyfishing trip. This would be an extra expense but worth it!
